# Justice Department Filing Opioid ‘Statement of Interest’

The Justice Department (DoJ) says it will file a “Statement of Interest” in a multi-district action regarding hundreds of lawsuits against opioid manufacturers and distributors. Plaintiffs in the suits include numerous cities, municipalities, and medical institutions that have borne the costs of the prescription opioid crisis. They contend the companies used false, deceptive, or unfair marketing practices for prescription opioids and say they want to recover costs associated with treatment and public safety measures relating to the epidemic.

A department statement says DoJ will primarily argue that the federal government’s health programs and law enforcement efforts have borne substantial costs from the opioid epidemic and should receive reimbursement.
