Kaleo Social Media Post Runs Afoul of FDA
A Kaleo social media post about Auvi-Q (epinephrine injection) was cited earlier this month by FDA because it presented benefit information but failed to include any risk information. CDER’s Office of Prescription Drug Promotion (OPDP) said in a just-posted untitled letter that the social media post thus was false and misleading and misbranded the drug product, which is used for treating life-threatening allergic reactions. The post was made by celebrity spokesperson Brittany Mahomes on her personal Instagram account under a paid partnership.
FDA acknowledged that the post included a statement on how to receive important safety information, but it said “this does not mitigate the misleading impression created by the omission of risk information. By omitting the risks associated with Auvi-Q, the post fails to provide material information about the consequences that may result from the use of Auvi-Q and creates a misleading impression about the drug’s safety.”
The OPDP letter requested that Kaleo cease any further violations, and asked for a written response that addresses its concerns and explains the company’s plan for the timely discontinuation of such communications.
