‘Killed by FDA-approved Device’: Amy Reed Dies of Cancer

Pioneer anti-power morcellator activist Amy Reed, 44, died 5/24 from complications stemming from disseminated uterine cancer, reported the Cancer Letter 5/25. Reed was the wife of cardio thoracic surgeon Hooman Noorchasm, who took up her cause in a virulent multimedia campaign widely reported by the Wall Street Journal and other outlets that criticized FDA’s approval of power morcellators.

Norchasm’s campaign coerced FDA into issuing a 4/2014 advisory on the device’s use and the voluntary withdrawal of the market-leading power morcellators made by Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon subsidiary, although the morcellator used on Reed was made by Germany’s Storz.
