# Lancet Oncology Commission Priorities

In a 54-page [report](http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanonc/article/PIIS1470-2045%2817%2930698-8/fulltext?ref=fdaweb.com), the *Lancet* Oncology Commission builds on the work of the Cancer Moonshot blue ribbon panel to lay out a series of future research priorities. “To ensure that cancer research in the U.S. continues to be world-leading,” it says, “it is imperative that investment is concentrated into specific research areas.”

The commission convened a group of cancer experts, including many who contributed to the blue ribbon panel report, along with national experts in areas that require more in-depth analysis, and international experts to identify ways to move these priorities into globally relevant points of discussion and possible collaboration.

The report is divided into areas of research priorities, with each priority area considered equally important to change cancer, and includes specific recommendations that will both directly improve cancer treatment and care, and are ready for immediate action.

The research priorities are: prevention; early cancer detection; drug discovery, development, and delivery; genomic and immune analysis of the tumor cell and the tumor macroenvironment; expediting access to cancer drug for research and patient access to clinical trials; applying advanced technologies to catalyze cancer breakthroughs; cancer immunotherapy, combination therapy, and precision oncology; pediatric oncology; supportive care; radiation oncology, nuclear medicine and imaging; surgical oncology; big data and enhanced data sharing; and health disparities, health system reform, oncopolicy, and regulation.
