# Lawmakers Push for UDIs on Insurance Forms

A bipartisan congressional group has written to HHS and its Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services supporting a recommendation that the device identifier portion of unique device identifiers (UDIs) be added to the standard information on electronic health insurance claims forms. Signing the letters were Sens. **Chuck Grassley** (R-IA) and **Elizabeth Warren** (D-MA), and Reps. **Lloyd Doggett** (D-TX), **Brian Fitzpatrick** (R-PA), and **Bill Pascrell** (D-NJ).

A [statement](https://www.finance.senate.gov/chairmans-news/grassley-bipartisan-members-of-congress-send-letter-advocating-for-unique-device-identifiers-information-to-be-added-to-electronic-health-insurance-claims-forms?ref=fdaweb.com) issued by the Senate Finance Committee (includes link to letter) says that when a medical device is recalled, it can be difficult to identify which patients will be affected, leading to risks of complications and increased costs to the healthcare system.

It also says that while FDA uses post-market surveillance to monitor problems with drugs and vaccines, it is limited in efforts to monitor medical devices because UDIs are not tracked on claims forms.

“This overdue change will help to reduce health risks and costs to the Medicare system,” the lawmakers wrote. “Including this information in claims transactions will enhance post-market surveillance of potential faulty devices and streamline the process of identifying affected patients when problems arise.”
