# Lilly’s Zepbound Shows Superiority Over Wegovy: Trial

Eli Lilly’s weight-loss drug Zepbound (tirzepatide) demonstrated superiority over Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy (semaglutide) in the head-to-head SURMOUNT-5 phase 3b clinical trial, according to the company. Over 72 weeks, participants taking Zepbound saw an average weight loss of 20.2%, outperforming the 13.7% weight loss reported by those taking Wegovy, Lilly says, adding that the 47% relative improvement met the trial’s primary endpoint and all five key secondary endpoints.

The trial evaluated adults who were obese/overweight and had at least one weight-related medical condition (hypertension or cardiovascular disease) but did not have diabetes, Lilly says. In a notable secondary outcome, 31.6% of those taking Zepbound achieved at least a 25% reduction in body weight, compared to 16.1% of those on Wegovy.

The safety profiles of both treatments were consistent with previous studies, Lilly says, with gastrointestinal side effects being the most commonly reported issues, and typically mild to moderate in severity.

Lilly plans to publish the full results in a peer-reviewed journal and present them at a medical conference next year.
