# McCaskill Seeking Drug Company Opioid Info

Sen. **Claire McCaskill** (D-MO), ranking Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, has asked Purdue, Janssen/Johnson & Johnson, Insys, Mylan, and Depomed for documents and records from the last five years indicating what the companies knew about risk for abuse of opioids and their marketing practices and sales presentations. *CNN* [reports](http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/28/health/senate-opioid-manufacturer-investigation/index.html?ref=fdaweb.com) that the companies were targeted based on their 2015 opioid sales volume.

Earlier this year, the network says, McCaskill asked the Justice Department Inspector General to open an investigation into the role of drug distributors in the opioid epidemic. She also has been investigating Medicare Part D’s role in preventing abuse of prescription narcotics.

“I hear it everywhere I go,” McCaskill said in a statement. “Drug overdose deaths, the vast majority of them related to prescription opioids or heroin, are single-handedly destroying families and communities across Missouri and the country and I refuse to just stand by and watch. We have an obligation to everyone devastated by this epidemic to find answers.”
