# Medical Device, Drug Recalls Drop in Q2: Sedgwick

Medical device recall events fell 4.4% in the second quarter of 2023 from 252 in the first quarter to 241, according to the latest [Sedgwick Recall Index](https://marketing.sedgwick.com/acton/media/4952/us-2023-recall-index-report-download-and-webinar-edition-2?ref=fdaweb.com). Meanwhile, the index says, drug recall events fell 6.3% from 144 in the first quarter to 135 in the second quarter.

Sedgwick says quality concerns were the leading cause of device recalls in Q2, with 38 events (15.8%). It says this is the first time in more than seven years that quality concerns were the leading cause. Parts issues were the second most common concern, and software, mislabeling, and safety were each cited in recalls.

The total affected units fell 20.3% from 83.3 million to 66.4 million.

For drugs, sterility dominated recall activity, with 54 events and 18.6 million affected units. CGMP deviations were the second most common cause for Q2 drug recalls. Total affected units dropped 51.1% from 49.5 million in Q1 to 24.2 million in Q2.
