# Medtronic HVAD Battery Recall is Class 1

FDA says the Medtronic 6/28 recall of 23,372 HeartWare Ventricular Assist Device (HVAD) batteries for electrical faults that cause battery failure is Class 1\. An agency [notice](https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/medical-device-recalls/medtronic-recalls-heartware-hvad-system-batteries-electrical-faults-cause-battery-failure?utm%5Fmedium=email&utm%5Fsource=govdelivery) says the batteries were distributed from 1/1/09 to the present.

The notice says batteries with an electrical fault may be unable to power the controller, unable to accept a charge from the battery charger, or appear to remain charged when in use.

“If the battery fails and the patient is unable to replace the failed battery with a charged, working battery or with AC or DC power,” the notice says, “the HVAD may stop working, leading to serious injury or death.” FDA says Medtronic reported 1,159 complaints, six injuries, and one death related to the issue.
