Medtronic Laryngoscope Recall is Class 1
FDA says a July Medtronic recall of some Medtronic McGrath MAC Video Laryngoscopes to remove them from where they are used or sold is Class 1. The company also issued a recall updating instructions for using other models of the devices without removing them.
An agency notice says the recalls were due to the possibility that the battery life may deplete below its designed threshold. “If this happens,” the notice says, “it increases the risk of battery instability and may lead to increased battery temperature and a potential explosion.”
FDA says using an affected product may cause serious adverse health consequences, including burns, lacerations, scarring and other tissue injuries, tooth loss, eye injury, damaged hearing or tinnitus, respiratory failure, hypoxia, scarring, and death. It says there has been one reported injury and no reported deaths.
