Medtronic MiniMed Pump Recall is Class 1

FDA says the Medtronic recall of its MiniMed 600 Series insulin pumps, due to a missing or broken retainer ring which helps to lock the insulin cartridge into place in the pump's reservoir compartment, is Class 1. If the cartridge is not locked into place, under or over delivery of insulin could occur, which could result in hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, a recall notice says. Severe hyperglycemia can result in a loss of consciousness, seizure, and death. Medtronic has received a total of 26,421 complaints in which the device malfunctioned, and it is aware of 2,175 injuries and one death, it says. The affected devices are:

  • Model 630G (MMT-1715) — all lots before 10/2019
  • Model 670G (MMT-1780) — all lots before 8/2019
