Medtronic MiniMed Pump Recall is Class 1

FDA says the Medtronic recall of its MiniMed insulin pumps due to potential cybersecurity risks is Class 1. An agency safety alert says an unauthorized person could potentially record and replay the wireless communication between the remote and the pump. Such a person could then instruct the pump to either over-deliver insulin to the patient, leading to hypoglycemia, or to stop insulin delivery, leading to high blood sugar and diabetic ketoacidosis, and even death.

The notice says that FDA is not aware of any reports of patient harm related to the potential cybersecurity risks to date.
