Medtronic Recalls NIM Vital Nerve Monitor

Medtronic’s Xomed unit has recalled (Class 1) its neuromonitoring device, NIM Vital Nerve Monitoring system, due to the potential for false negative responses. A recall notice says the company notified consignees on 06/24/2024 that Medtronic had developed software version 1.5.4 to address the issue and that a company representative would contact customers to install the new software version and orrect all affected products in their inventory.

The device is described as a system for surgical monitoring when a nerve may be at risk due to unintentional manipulation. Electrodes are placed in the appropriate muscle locations in the patient for the procedure being performed, Medtronic says. When a particular nerve has been activated or stimulated, the monitor warns the surgeon and operating room staff, providing both visual alerts on a color touchscreen monitor and audio feedback to help minimize trauma to the nerve.
