# Meniscus Implant Gains ‘Breakthrough’ Status

FDA has granted Active Implants a breakthrough device designation for the NUsurface Meniscus Implant. The device is made from medical grade polymer and because of its composite structure and design, it does not require fixation to bone or soft tissues, the company says. It mimics the function of the natural meniscus and redistributes loads transmitted across the knee joint. Current treatment for a damaged or torn meniscus includes pain management, physical therapy, injections, repair techniques or meniscectomy. The implant is currently marketed in Belgium, Germany, Italy and Israel.
