Merit Medical ‘Breakthrough’ for Knee Embosphere Microspheres

FDA has granted Merit Medical Systems a breakthrough device designation for its Embosphere Microspheres for use in genicular artery embolization (GAE) procedures. GAE is intended to reduce pain and disability caused by knee osteoarthritis by reducing blood flow to the knee and minimizing the inflammatory process.

Merit Medical says its Embosphere Microspheres are based on its proprietary microsphere technology, and designed to offer controlled, targeted embolization. They are biocompatible, hydrophilic, nonresorbable, microspheres produced from an acrylic polymer and impregnated with porcine gelatin, it says, adding that the device has more than 20 years of clinical experience and have been used in more than 250,000 procedures.
