Micro-Organospheres Show Cancer Proof of Concept: NCI

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) says researchers at the biotechnology company Xilis have used micro-organospheres to accurately predict in a small study of eight colorectal cancer patients whether oxaliplatin would shrink their tumors. The researchers, funded in part by NCI, created the micro-organospheres with tissue from a patient’s tumor biopsy that is run through a machine that produces thousands of three-dimensional mini-replicas of the cancer suspended in tiny compartments on a lab dish.

NCI says a larger study is being launched to determine whether the early findings hold up.
