Miracor Heart Device Gains Breakthrough Status

FDA has granted Miracor Medical a breakthrough device designation for its PiCSO Impulse System for treating ST-elevated myocardial infarction patients. PiCSO therapy is intended to be provided by interventional cardiologists during percutaneous coronary intervention in patients experiencing ST-elevated myocardial infarction. It works by clearing the coronary microcirculation by intermittently occluding the coronary sinus outflow resulting in improved perfusion of the infarcted area of the heart, the company says. The device is also intended to reduce infarct size after STEMI, which is strongly associated with reductions in heart failure hospitalizations and reduced mortality, it says.
