Moderna Seeks OK for Another Covid Booster Dose

Moderna has submitted an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) amendment to permit an additional Covid-19 vaccine booster (fourth dose) in adults 18 years of age and older who have received an initial booster of any of the authorized or approved vaccines. “The request to include adults over 18 years of age was made to provide flexibility for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and healthcare providers to determine the appropriate use of an additional booster dose of mRNA-1273, including for those at higher risk of Covid-19 due to age or comorbidities,” the company says. The submission is based in part on recently published data generated in the U.S. and Israel following the coronavirus outbreaks cause by the Omicron variant, it says. Moderna’s EUA request comes on the heels of a Pfizer and BioNTech application for a similar second booster dose of their Covid-19 vaccine (see earlier story), but their dose would be for adults 65 years of age and older.
