# Monitor Thyroid in Some Babies and Children: FDA

FDA is recommending that newborns and children through age 3 have follow-up thyroid monitoring within three weeks after receiving injections of contrast media containing iodine for X-rays and other medical imaging procedures. A 3/30 [Drug Safety Communication](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety-and-availability/fda-recommends-thyroid-monitoring-babies-and-young-children-who-receive-injections-iodine-containing?utm%5Fmedium=email&utm%5Fsource=govdelivery) says the recommendation is based on the agency’s recent review of published studies. It updates an 11/17/15 Drug Safety Communication that reported on rare cases of underactive thyroid in infants given iodine-containing contrast agents for medical imaging.

The new communication says the agency’s research showed that underactive thyroid or a temporary decrease in thyroid hormone levels were uncommon, but the conditions should be identified and treated early when needed to prevent future complications.

“Newborns, particularly those born premature, and children in their first three years with underlying conditions such as heart issues may be at higher risk for problems of the thyroid…,” the communication says.

FDA says it has approved a new Warning for the labeling of the entire class of iodinated contrast media injections and monitoring recommendations for children age 3 and younger.
