Multiple Charges Against NC Physician

A federal grand jury returned 1/5 a superseding indictment charging North Carolina physician Anita Jackson with adulteration of medical devices, paying illegal remunerations, making and using materially false healthcare documents, mail fraud, and conspiracy. She faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

The indictment says that between 2014 and 2018, Jackson billed Medicare more than $46 million for allegedly rendering more than 1,200 incidents of “balloon sinuplasty” services to over 700 patients, according to a Department of Justice statement. Her practice, Greater Carolina Ear, Nose, and Throat, received more than $5.4 million for the services. During portions of those years, the department says, Jackson was the top-paid provider of balloon sinuplasty services in the U.S., despite her practice being located outside of a major metropolitan area.
