# New FDA Jardiance Breakthrough Therapy Designation

FDA has granted breakthrough therapy designation to Boehringer Ingelheim and Lilly’s Jardiance (empagliflozin) for treating heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. An *American Journal of Managed Care* online [post](https://www.ajmc.com/view/fda-grants-empagliflozin-breakthrough-therapy-designation-in-hfpef?ref=fdaweb.com) says Jardiance is the first drug in its class to gain the designation. The post says results from the EMPEROR Preserved trial showed that Jardiance, a sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor reduced cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure by 21%.
