New FDA Jardiance Breakthrough Therapy Designation

FDA has granted breakthrough therapy designation to Boehringer Ingelheim and Lilly’s Jardiance (empagliflozin) for treating heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. An American Journal of Managed Care online post says Jardiance is the first drug in its class to gain the designation. The post says results from the EMPEROR Preserved trial showed that Jardiance, a sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor reduced cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure by 21%.
