The rule permits the use of symbols in device labeling without adjacent explanatory text (typically called “stand-alone symbols”) if certain requirements are met. It is intended to harmonize FDA device labeling requirements, and stipulates that symbols accompanied by adjacent explanatory text are still permitted.
