# NIH Stops Convalescent Plasma Trial

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has stopped a clinical trial evaluating Covid-19 convalescent plasma in treating emergency department patients who developed mild to moderate Covid-19 symptoms. The [NIH decision](https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/nih-halts-trial-covid-19-convalescent-plasma-emergency-department-patients-mild-symptoms?ref=fdaweb.com) was recommended by the trial’s independent data and safety monitoring board, which recently examined the second planned interim analysis of the trial data and determined that while the convalescent plasma intervention caused no harm, it was unlikely to benefit the patient group.

The trial was launched 8/2020 at 47 hospital emergency departments across the U.S. and had enrolled 511 of the 900 participant recruitment goal. It was evaluating the effectiveness of convalescent plasma – blood plasma derived from patients who have recovered from Covid-19 – in adults who came to an emergency department with mild to moderate symptoms they had for a week or less.

NIH says the recent data analysis indicated that the trial was highly unlikely to demonstrate that convalescent plasma prevents progression from mild to severe illness in at-risk emergency department non-hospitalized participants.
