Non-Opioid Analgesic Draft Guidance

FDA has published a draft guidance, Development of Non-Opioid Analgesics for Acute Pain, as required by the Substance-Use Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment for Patients and Communities Act. The document addresses the agency’s current thinking on three specific topics — development of non-opioid analgesic products for acute pain, labeling claims, and expedited programs as they pertain to this purpose.

The guidance does not address the management of chronic pain, which will be the focus of a future guidance. It also does not address the development of opioid products.
