Olympus Recalls Insufflation Units
Olympus has recalled (Class 1) its high-flow insufflation units (model UHI-4) that are used in laparoscopic surgeries after receiving reports about patients suffering arrhythmias, described as short cardiac arrests, during surgical procedures where the devices were used. “These events may have been due to an over-insufflation of the abdominal cavity resulting from use of the UHI-4 during the procedures,” a recall notice says.
The device is designed to deliver and regulate carbon dioxide gas into a patient’s abdomen, creating a pneumoperitoneum, during laparoscopic procedures, the company says. The inflated abdominal space allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries with improved visualization and access to internal organs, according to Olympus.
