# OND Deputy Named Permanent Director

Acting Office of New Drugs (OND) director **Mary Tran Thanh-Hai** has been officially named the new OND director, replacing previous head **Peter Stein** who was forced out of the agency under mass layoffs in April. At the time, Stein was offered a reassignment to a position in patient affairs, which he declined, reportedly calling it a “ridiculous” and “nonsensical” offer.

Thanh-Hai has been at the agency for almost 28 years. She previously served as OND deputy director of clinical science for the past five years. Thanh-Hai is an internist/endocrinologist, having received her medical degree from Georgetown University.
