OND Deputy Named Permanent Director

Acting Office of New Drugs (OND) director Mary Tran Thanh-Hai has been officially named the new OND director, replacing previous head Peter Stein who was forced out of the agency under mass layoffs in April. At the time, Stein was offered a reassignment to a position in patient affairs, which he declined, reportedly calling it a “ridiculous” and “nonsensical” offer.

Thanh-Hai has been at the agency for almost 28 years. She previously served as OND deputy director of clinical science for the past five years. Thanh-Hai is an internist/endocrinologist, having received her medical degree from Georgetown University.
