Otsuka Scraps Alzheimer’s Agitation Drug

Otsuka Pharmaceutical has terminated its development of the novel compound AVP-786 as a potential treatment for patients with agitation associated with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease. The decision was based on results from a Phase 3 program that showed no statistically significant difference was observed between AVP-786 and placebo in the primary endpoint — a change from baseline to week 12 in the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory total score, the company says. Otsuka adds that it will “continue research and development efforts to meet unresolved medical needs and will continue to focus on addressing agitation associated with Alzheimer's disease.”
