# ‘Overdose Crisis’ Gets Priority in CDER Report

The CDER *Drug Safety Priorities* report for FY 2023 “features the many ways in which CDER continued to be involved in promoting and protecting public health, as well as ongoing activities to address the national drug overdose crisis.” The [report](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety-and-availability/advances-fdas-drug-safety-programs?utm%5Fmedium=email&utm%5Fsource=govdelivery) says the Center’s efforts included strategies to address the related crises of overdose deaths and nonmedical use of prescription opioids and other controlled substances, including supporting the development of evidence-based treatments to effectively manage pain.

In an introduction to the report, CDER director **Patrizia Cavazzoni** says the Center “made changes to the prescribing information of two highly misused drug classes — opioids and stimulants — to increase safe use and address concerns of nonmedical use, addiction, and overdose.” Also in 2023, she says, CDER approved the first over-the-counter naloxone nasal sprays and updated the FDA and Kratom Web page to better inform the public about safety issues with that herbal substance that is not approved by FDA for any use.
