# Pain Doctor Settles Company Kickback Allegations

Santa Monica, CA, pain specialist **Gerald Sacks** has agreed to pay $271,259.12 to resolve allegations that he violated the False Claims Act in connection with prescribing Purdue Pharma and Depomed medications to Medicare beneficiaries. A Department of Justice [release](https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/california-pain-specialist-agrees-settle-alleged-receipt-kickbacks-pharmaceutical-companies?ref=fdaweb.com) says Sacks prescribed the medications in exchange, at least in part, for receiving paid speaking and consulting work from the drug companies. “Prescribing drugs in exchange for consulting work from their manufacturers violates the anti-kickback statute, and renders associated claims to federal healthcare programs false,” the release says.
