Panel Backs JN.1 Variant-Targeted Covid Vaccine

An FDA advisory committee 6/5 unanimously voted (16-0) to recommend that Covid-19 vaccine makers formulate their upcoming fall shots to provide protection against the JN.1 variant, which was the most prevalent variant in February. In recent weeks, JN.1 has been less common as “descendants” KP.2 and KP.3 have been circulating more prominently. Panel members also discussed whether the vaccines should target a specific JN.1 variant, but they believed a broad JN.1 vaccine would provide adequate protection against all subvariants. The agency will make its final decision in the next few weeks.
