# Panel Backs Teva’s Extended-release Pain Drug

A joint meeting by FDA’s Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products Advisory Committee and Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee has voted 14 to 3 to support approval of Teva’s Vantrela ER (hydrocodone bitartrate extended-release tablets) for managing pain severe enough to require long-term opioid treatment and for which alternative treatment options are inadequate. The panel also voted to recommend that the product’s labeling reflect abuse deterrent properties for potential abuse by oral, nasal and intravenous routes. Based on the committees’ votes, Teva said that, if approved, the label for Vantrela ER will describe the product’s abuse-deterrent properties that are expected to reduce, but not totally prevent, the drug’s abuse when tablets are manipulated.
