Pew Report Calls for Better Data on Antibiotic Use

A new report by Pew Charitable Trusts says that currently available data on antibiotic use in the U.S. are insufficient. “Key stakeholders from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors must work together to improve the quality and availability of data in order to expand antibiotic stewardship in human health care and promote the responsible use of these drugs in food animals,” the report says. To improve antibiotic use data, the report recommends that:

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services should finalize and implement its proposal for hospital antibiotic use mandatory reporting to the National Healthcare Safety Network.
Congress should increase FDA and USDA’s appropriations to improve their capacity to implement currently unfunded data collection plans.
