Pfizer Gains Breakthrough Status for Rare Disease Drug

FDA has granted Pfizer a breakthrough therapy designation for tafamidis for treating patients with transthyretin cardiomyopathy, a rare and fatal condition associated with progressive heart failure. The designation was based on data from the tafamidis Phase 3 Transthyretin Cardiomyopathy (ATTR-ACT) study, in which the drug demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in all-cause mortality and frequency of cardiovascular-related hospitalizations, according to the company. Currently, there are no approved pharmacological treatments specifically indicated for the disease, and the average life expectancy for people with transthyretin cardiomyopathy is three to five years from diagnosis, it says.
