# Pfizer Pays $60 million to Settle Biohaven Kickbacks

Pfizer has agreed to pay $59.7 million to resolve allegations that its subsidiary, Biohaven Pharmaceutical, engaged in illegal kickback schemes before being acquired by Pfizer. The settlement resolves claims that Biohaven provided improper financial incentives to healthcare providers to encourage prescriptions of its migraine drug Nurtec ODT, in violation of federal anti-kickback laws.

According to the [Department of Justice](https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/pfizer-agrees-pay-nearly-60m-resolve-false-claims-allegations-relating-improper-physician?ref=fdaweb.com) (DoJ), from 3/2020 to 9/2022, Biohaven paid healthcare professionals through speaker honoraria and sponsored meals at high-end restaurants to promote Nurtec ODT. Some of these events were attended by individuals with no educational need, such as the speakers’ family members. The DoJ also claimed that some prescribers repeatedly attended programs covering the same material, thus receiving no educational benefit.

Pfizer, which acquired Biohaven 10/2022, put a stop to these promotional programs after its acquisition.
