# Pfizer Settles Celebrex/Bextra Suit for $486 Million

Pfizer says it has reached a $486 million settlement with shareholders for allegedly concealing safety risks associated with its Celebrex and Bextra pain drugs. The company says the deal is “subject to the negotiation of a final settlement agreement and court approval.” Shareholders accused the company of hiding clinical trial data that suggested increased cardiovascular risks associated with the drugs.

In 2009, Pfizer and its Pharmacia & Upjohn subsidiary [agreed to pay](http://www.fdaweb.com/login.php?sa=v&aid=D5112652&searchWords=bextra&cate=S&stid=%241%24QK5.Zi2.%24vvM91c4uoEwcHrfIKlzAA1) $2.3 billion to resolve criminal and civil liability in illegal promotion of several drug products. The U.S. Department of Justice said it was the largest healthcare fraud settlement in its history at the time.” As part of that settlement, Pfizer entered into a corporate integrity agreement with the HHS Inspector General.
