Philips Recalls Ventilators Over Contaminated Plastic

Philips Respironics has recalled (Class 1) certain BiPAP (bi-level positive airway pressure) ventilators that may contain a plastic contaminated with a non-compatible material. “If that plastic is in the device motor, it may release certain chemicals of concern called volatile organic compounds (VOCs),” an FDA recall notice says. The potential risks of inhaling VOCs include headache, dizziness, eye/respiratory irritation, nausea or vomiting, and toxic/cancer-causing effects, the alert says, adding that the plastic may also cause the machine to fail and stop working suddenly during use. To date, FDA says it is not aware of any injuries related to the issue.
