PhRMA on Patient Involvement in Rare Diseases

Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) says it strongly supports involvement of patients, their caregivers, and advocates in the rare disease drug development process and it commends FDA for the format and construct of a 4/29 public meeting it held on the subject. The association’s letter says it believes that patient perspectives, experience, and preference information is particularly important in the context of rare disease because it could and should be leveraged, where appropriate, to support or add meaning or context to more quantifiable data.

The group says participation at the 4/29 meeting “highlights the need for FDA to support use of patient input by offering actionable standards and a robust framework for collection and incorporation of patient input to inform regulatory advice and decision-making.”
