# PhRMA Urges NDC Implementation Caution

Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) says FDA should exercise caution in implementing any format changes for the National Drug Code (NDC). In a 1/5 comment [letter](https://www.regulations.gov/contentStreamer?documentId=FDA-2018-N-2610-0023&attachmentNumber=1&contentType=pdf&ref=fdaweb.com), the trade group says that any changes to the NDC “will require a substantial amount of time and resources to revise production and packaging systems. Further, appropriate lead time to revise supply chain security systems to accommodate a new NDC format will be required to avoid unintended supply disruption.”

PhRMA recommends that once the future format of the NDC is determined, it should be implemented prospectively only, beginning at a single pre-designated point in time. And it asks FDA to give stakeholders a minimum of two years’ notice before implementation of the new format.
