Pradaxa Pellets Approved for Children

FDA has approved Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals’ Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate) oral pellets to treat children aged three months to less than 12 years with venous thromboembolism directly after they have been treated with a blood thinner given by injection for at least five days. It also approved the drug for preventing recurrent clots among patients in the same age group who have completed treatment for their first venous thromboembolism, according to an agency release.

Pradaxa is the first FDA-approved blood thinner that children can take by mouth, the agency says. It was originally approved in 2010 to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in adult patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
