Proposed Rule on New NDC Code Format

Federal Register proposed rule: FDA is proposing to amend its regulations on the format of the National Drug Code (NDC), an FDA standard for uniquely identifying drug products marketed in the U.S. Specifically, all NDCs will be required to be 12 digits in length with three distinct segments and one uniform format. The first segment is the labeler code and will be six digits, the second segment is the product code and will be four digits, and the third segment is the package code and will be two digits. Additionally, it proposes to revise the drug product barcode label requirements to permit the use of other data carriers that meet certain standards. To view the notice, click here.
