Public Citizen Ideas to Improve Advisory Committees

The Public Citizen Health Research Group says there are three things FDA can do to optimize its use of and processes for advisory committees. In a comment letter, Public Citizen recommends that the agency:

maintain or perhaps expand voting questions as a central feature of advisory committee meetings;
release sponsor and FDA briefing materials five to seven business days before the meeting date; and
reduce to zero, with rare exceptions, the number of advisory committee voting members who are granted waivers to participate, despite having an otherwise disqualifying financial interest.

“All these recommendations, if adopted, would improve the public perception and understanding of advisory committees,” Public Citizen says.
