# Purdue on Fast Track for Potential Naloxone Competitor

FDA has granted Purdue Pharma a fast track designation for nalmefene hydrochloride injection, an investigational opioid antagonist for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. Nalmefene has a longer duration of effect than naloxone, another opioid antagonist currently approved for opioid overdose, the company says. The agency designation is based on data from the company’s IND, as well as the anticipated efficacy and safety data from planned clinical studies.

“Opioid antagonists like naloxone have played an important role in the emergency treatment of opioid overdose,” Purdue says. “However, because of the increasing number of deaths due to fentanyl and its even more potent analogs, we are focusing on a potentially more potent and longer-lasting rescue option specifically intended to work in those overdose situations.”
