FDA 11/19 [responded to a petition](https://www.fda.gov/downloads/Food/LabelingNutrition/UCM624755.pdf?ref=fdaweb.com) to allow a new qualified health claim for edible oils containing high levels of oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat that has cardiovascular benefits when it replaces heart-damaging saturated fat. Product labeling for the oils can state: “supportive but not conclusive scientific evidence suggests that daily consumption of about 1½ tablespoons (20 grams) of oils containing high levels of oleic acid, may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease,” an [agency notice](https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/UCM626210.htm?utm%5Fcampaign=111918%5FPR%5FFDA%20acknowledges%20new%20cardiovascular%20health%20claim%20for%20oleic%20acid&utm%5Fmedium=email&utm%5Fsource=Eloqua) says. The claim will also need to distinguish that to achieve this benefit, the oils “should replace fats and oils higher in saturated fat and not increase the total number of calories you eat in a day.”
