Researchers Caution Hospitals on Drug Industry Money

Researchers from Harvard Medical School and the University of Pittsburgh say that biomedical company payments to teaching hospitals may raise concerns for institutional conflicts of interest. Writing in Health Affairs, the researchers say that 91% of teaching hospitals received industry payments totaling $832 million in 2018.

“We observed substantial royalty payments,” the researchers write, “which may reflect the downstream benefits of research partnerships, as well as substantial payments for gifts and education, which raise concerns for institutional conflicts of interest.

The authors conclude that hospitals should strengthen policies to prevent the institutional conflicts of interest that may arise from these payments while promoting beneficial industry collaborations. They also recommend broadening Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reporting requirements to all hospitals to meet the Physician Payments Sunshine Act’s goals of encouraging transparency and preventing inappropriate industry influence.
