Revive Therapeutics Orphan Status for Cannabidiol

FDA has granted Revive Therapeutics an orphan drug designation for cannabidiol for preventing ischemia and reperfusion injury (IRI) resulting from solid organ transplantation. IRI can result in a higher incidence of acute and chronic rejection, as well as long-term morbidity and mortality, the company says. Revive believes that cannabidiol’s immunosuppressant and anti-inflammatory protective effects may provide “a novel, more beneficial strategy to attenuate the damage induced by ischemia and reperfusion during solid organ transplantation.” Previously, the agency granted the company an orphan designation for cannabidiol and its use in treating autoimmune hepatitis.
