Robotic Exoskeleton Cleared for Brain Injury

FDA has cleared a Ekso Bionics 501(k) for the EksoNR robotic exoskeleton for use with patients with acquired brain injury (ABI). The device was previously cleared for stroke and spinal cord injury rehabilitation in 2016. The company says that ABI is the broadest category of brain injury and comprises both traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury causes.

The device features software to customize motor support strength for various impairment levels, from full assistance to patient-initiated movement. It also has sensors and software that continuously monitor and regulate leg movement to minimize compensatory gait patterns, Ekso says.
