Safety Alert on Hep C Protease Inhibitors

FDA has issued a safety alert on three chronic hepatitis drugs — Abbvie’s Mavyret (glecaprevir and pibrentasvir), Merck’s Zepatier (elbasvir), and Gileadֺ’s Vosevi (sofosbuvir) — after some patients with moderate to severe liver impairment experienced worsening liver function or liver failure. All three drugs are hepatitis C virus protease inhibitors and are not indicated for use in patients with moderate to severe liver impairment. “In most patients, symptoms resolved or new onset worsening of liver function improved after stopping the medicine,” the alert says. FDA says it will continue to monitor the safety concern and it will communicate any new information when it becomes available.
