# Sanders, Khanna Plan Drug Price Relief Legislation

Sen. **Bernie Sanders** (I-VT) and Rep. **Ro Khanna** (D-CA) say they will introduce at the start of the next Congress their Prescription Drug Price Relief Act to “significantly reduce prescription drug prices for Americans.” In a media [statement](https://www.sanders.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/sanders-khanna-to-introduce-legislation-to-drastically-lower-prescription-drug-prices?ref=fdaweb.com) (contains links to text and summaries of the Senate and House bills), Sanders says the measure would require HHS to ensure that Americans don’t pay more for prescription drugs than the median price in Canada, the UK, France, Germany, and Japan. If drug companies refuse to lower prices below that level, he says, the federal government would approve cheaper generic versions of the drugs, regardless of any patents or marketing exclusivities in place.

Sanders claims that if the bill becomes law, the median price of branded prescription drugs could go down by more than 40%, and savings for certain branded drugs could be even greater.
